A Dragonfly Tale: To the Meadow and Back by David Mathew Tennis introduces young readers to a variety of creatures and their habitats, engaging the imagination by transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. When an outcast young dragonfly named Daisy decides to help her friend and new acquaintance Criket the cricket, a storyteller and prankster, she quickly finds herself engaged in adventures that will test her ability, courage, and character. Daisy Dragonfly learns to think not fight during her journey. Daisy is soon trapped in a spider web, escapes from an army of ants, and uses of her intelligence to convince a mighty screech owl to release her from its clutches.

Throughout her journey, Daisy Dragonfly meets many creatures, including the bee known as the Minister of Pollen, Duchess the screech owl, and several other friendly and not-so-friendly creatures. As Daisy embarks on her adventure, she is joined by Criket a story telling cricket and Bertram, the nervous blackbird and the meadows herald. The trio must work together to defeat the ratty-haired Cat and the forces of darkness that are the Dark Toad. Guiding Daisy through her journey is the mystical Frogg. The leader of the pond, Frogg oversees nature’s delicate balance in order to assure its continued survival.

A mighty warrior, skilled healer, wise judge, and legend keeper for many of the different species that live in and around the pond, Frogg serves as a source of guidance and wisdom for Daisy. Frogg offers his insight regarding life, the pond, and the nature of survival, stating, When everything changes the pond remains. When the leaves fall the pond remains, and when the trees blossom, the pond remains. It gives us everything we need: food, shelter, life.

Even in the dry times when the pond is just a patch of mud, I burrow down and the pond giveth. A Dragonfly Tale combines action-adventure with fantasy while encouraging a love for nature, delicate eco-systems, and creatures great and small. Will Daisy be victorious in her journey? Will she retrieve Bitty Bees orange pollen, help Criket get back to his meadow, and finally be able to fulfill her dream of flying free of bullying and ridicule in the open meadow, or will her deepest fears defeat her?
